Why do corporations still need offices? |

It puzzles me why corporations still need these huge office buildings for all their administrative staff. The reality is that most people communicate by e-mail, even if they sit side by side in cubicles. I moved out of the office in '92 and managed people over vast geographic areas who all worked from home offices without any problems. Today's technology certainly allows us to abandon office buildings (at least in the form and for the purpose we know them today) and work from home. Changing our ways of doing business could not only significantly reduce overhead cost but also our footprint on our planet as well as improve productivity. Is it really so difficult to let go of control and introduce trust and motivation, or are there other things at play? Your thoughts? |
